Armikrog Successfully Funded And Coming To Wii U!

Armikrog, the spiritual successor to The Neverhood, has just wrapped up its successful Kickstarter run after a tense final week. The game kicked things off with an initial goal of $900,000 and very late in the run added a Wii U stretch goal when funding reached $950,000. There is little doubt that the Wii U stretch is what pushed the campaign over the edge and earned the developers over $970,000 (the campaign was struggling over the last couple weeks). The Wii U version was made possible after Nintendo saw the promising title and contacted Pencil Test Studios to make them officially licensed Nintendo developers. Not only has the game been confirmed for the Wii U but it will also be getting a load of really cool exclusive features that take advantage of the consoles unique Gamepad. You can expect this game to hit Wii U, Linux, PC and Mac in 2014. Personally, I couldn't be happier that the game got funded since The Neverhood is one of my all time favorite PC adventure games. What are your thoughts on this incredibly unique adventure title? Please comment below.

Fans Petition Nintendo To Make 3DS & Wii U Region Free!

Nintendo has always had an on and off relationship with region locking and their many consoles. Taking a look back at their various portable and home consoles, we find the the move to disc based machines brought about the worst case of region locking. Microsoft and Sony have both changed their stances and the Xbone and PS4 will be region free when they launch this fall. This has prompted Nintendo fans to band together in hopes of changing Nintendo's stance on the issue.

A new petition has launched with one goal, to get the Big N to remove the region lock from Wii U and 3DS. It has been proven quite a few times in recent years that Nintendo is a fan driven company who actually listens to their fans and makes changes accordingly (Operation Rainfall, Earthbound on Wii U Virtual Console, YouTube Let's Play). With any luck, the hardcore Nintendo fans can make a difference again and free our beloved Wii U and 3DS from the tyranny of region locking. Make your voice heard!

Mega Man Goes Unlimited This July!

Back in early May, Treon's Realm reported on the development of a new fan made game for the Blue Bomber. That game is Mega Man Unlimited and it is finally reaching its anticipated completion. A new trailer titled "Message from Dr. Light!" has been released announcing the games upcoming release for PC on July 14th. Fans are quite excited for this new title considering how Capcom continues to do little more than release merchandise for Mega Man's 25th anniversary. As we approach the release date, you can stay up to date with the Mega Man Unlimited Website and Facebook page. Enjoy!

Electrically Charged Teslagrad Coming To Wii U!

Indie developer Rain Games is bringing their latest game to the Nintendo Wii U eShop. Their ambitious new game, titled Teslagrad, is a 2D puzzle-platformer which uses electricity and magnetism for its core gameplay. The game was built using the indie (and Wii U) friendly Unity platform and is driven entirely by its beautiful visuals to tell the story as there is no text or dialogue. Using the fascinating (and criminally overlooked) Nikola Tesla as well as his science on electricity and magnetism as the core of the game is a brilliant and fresh concept that is sure to help this game really stand out. Enjoy!

The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Features and E3 2013 Trailer

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (official title) will see release for the Wii U this October. It's time to look at what we know about the game and what has yet to be revealed:

What is being added/changed
  • Touch screen and stylus controls for Wind Waker wand - Fittingly, you can now use the stylus to control the titular Wind Waker (purists can still use the control sticks if they choose). Also of note, you can now equip items via the touch screen meaning you no longer have to pause the game and constantly enter a menu to switch between the games many items. This got to be a little irksome with the sail and Wind Waker often being switched in and out of you inventory way too frequently. Nintendo has corrected this by assigning these items to the directional pad on the left and keeping the item buttons (A, X, and Y) free for regular inventory.
  • Gyro aiming - This may seem trivial but anyone who played Ocarina of Time 3DS will tell you how much more enjoyable aiming was in that game due to the gyro controls. The precision is on par with the Wii Remote and makes looking/aiming a much more enjoyable and immersive experience.
  • New faster sail - At some point during the quest, you will gain access to a new sail which will allow you to sail at double speed. The original sailing speed was imposed due to hardware limitations of the GameCube but the Wii U renders the entire ocean overworld at once which lifts those limitations. This is a pretty exciting addition that is sure to improve game flow and eliminate complaints from fans who whined about the plodding pace of exploration.
  • Tingle Bottle (Miiverse) - The Tingle Tuner has been completely removed from this version of the game and replaced with the Tingle Bottle. This new item integrates Miiverse in a way never before seen on any Wii U game. The item allows players to create a "message in a bottle" that is thrown out to sea (and in turn posted on Miiverse). You will also see bottles wash up on the shores of your game from other players around the world. It's an interesting feature that maintains the spirit of the Tingle Tuner while eliminating the expense (the Game Boy Advance and Link Cable). The only thing not known at this point is if the hidden Tingle Statues will remain in the game and how you would access them.
  • HD remastered graphics - The remastered graphics is a key distinction in that this is not simply an upscaled version of Wind Waker, Nintendo actually went back and reworked everything including textures, shaders and lighting. The lighting is the most noteworthy improvement giving the world a sense of depth not seen in the GameCube original. The new 1080p HD visuals are gorgeous the increased resolution makes the world look massive when compared to the original.
  • Off-TV play - One of the Wii U's best features will once again be available for Wind Waker HD. If you are in the middle of your epic quest and someone wants to use the TV, you can drop the game onto the Wii U Gamepad and continue playing. Microsoft can have their TV integration, this is the true game changer.

What is not being added/changed
  • No new dungeons - It is well known that The Wind Waker had a few dungeons cut in order to meet its original release in 2003 and many hoped to see their return in the Wii U version. It has been confirmed that these dungeons will not be put into the game. It should be noted that while some may be disappointed by this, series head Eiji Aonuma went on record stating that these dungeons were not lost but instead used in later Zelda games. This means that any Zelda released between 2003 and 2013 potentially has parts of or these entire dungeons incorporated into their worlds. Knowing the fans, I expect to see many debates over the coming years over which games have these "lost dungeons".
  • New content - If you are a hard core fan of the GameCube version, do not expect this title to stray far from what made the original a classic. Expect this game to basically take what you loved about the original and tweak the experience to near perfection much like what Nintendo did with Ocarina of Time for 3DS. The only thing that could change would be more modification to the games "second quest" which originally featured stuff like an outfit change and early access to the color camera. A mirror mode of the map is one such possibility.

What we don't know yet
  • Triforce of Courage Quest - This quest which takes place late in the game ground things to a halt for many gamer's and has been one of the biggest things fans have asked to be changed. It has been confirmed that this quest has been tweaked to vastly improve the flow of the game but the details have not been revealed yet. I suspect one of the biggest tweaks will reduce or eliminate the massive monetary requirement for translating the Triforce Charts.
  • Soundtrack - The trailer on display at E3 2013 featured the soundtrack from the GameCube original but Nintendo is notorious for using alternate music for their Zelda trailers leading many to speculate on potential music changes. While I doubt Nintendo will go for a fully orchestrated version of the soundtrack, we may hear a remastered version of the original in the same way Nintendo improved the sound quality of the Ocarina of Time soundtrack for the 3DS.
  • Picto Box capacity - As mentioned before, the games Picto Box camera had an embarrassing low storage capacity making anything it was used for quite a chore. While an increased capacity has not been revealed, early rumors point to the new Picto Box being able to hold many more pictures before needing to be emptied.
This is what is currently known about this highly anticipated title but we can expect more details as we approach the October release. What are your thoughts on this remastered classic? Please comment below. Enjoy!

Nintendo Wii U Is Getting A Double Dose Of Oddworld!

The Oddworld series is one of the most unique and polished franchises to ever come out of an independent studio and I'm happy to report that 2 of the series biggest and best titles are coming to the Wii U eShop. Oddworld has always had a style that felt like it belonged on a Nintendo console but due to a variety of factors, it never happened outside of a few Game Boy titles hampered by technical limitations. It's thrilling to see this highly underrated series make a comeback at a time when its unique style and creativity can truly be appreciated.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty (TBA 2013/2014?) - This is an HD remastered version of the original game that started the entire series. It is currently unknown if this new version will feature new content but it is likely considering the title change from the original "Abe's Oddysee" subtitle. It has been confirmed that the new visuals are full 3D (running on Unity) with gameplay continuing its 2D tradition. The new visuals are a sight to behold when you consider that the original used 2D pre-rendered visuals and movies to convey the intended vision. Enjoy!

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD (TBA 2014) - A sublime and incredibly unique title that managed to deliver a game WAY ahead of its time. The game was originally released back in 2005 but managed to feature 1st/3rd person gameplay, platforming and stealth with everything working quite well together. This game is a must for anyone who is sick and tired of the traditional FPS and wants something with more creativity. Wii U specific additions have not been announced but an interactive map, motion controls, off-screen play and quick switching for the games living ammo are likely additions.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS & Wii U Trailer!

New Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Trailer!

With all the excitement and buzz around E3 right now, you'd be forgiven for missing the amazing trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug which is coming this December. While some were divided on the first film, any chance to return to Peter Jackson's awesome vision of Middle Earth is a welcome one (personally, I am loving these films). The trailer is sure to delight fans with a favorite character from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy making their debut in the new film. We will also get our first look at the mighty Smaug which may just end up as one of the most impressive dragons ever put to film. Enjoy!

Super Mario 3D World Trailer For Wii U Reveals The New Cat Suit!

Kingdom Hearts III Coming To Wii U?

With the Kingdom Hearts III reveal at last nights Sony E3 press conference, many fans went nuts for the long awaiting title and missed out on the revelation that the game is coming to next-gen consoles and not just Sony's PS4. Xbox One and PS4 are currently announced but rumors suggest that Nintendo's Wii U may also see a release of the game.

While the series has a big history with Sony, there are questions surrounding the Xbox One release considering that the game doesn't not fit that systems demographic and none of the previous titles have been on a Microsoft console. Nintendo on the other hand has had a rich history with the franchise with 4 of the 7 previous games having appeared on Nintendo handhelds. This has led many to believe that the game will appear on the Wii U once Nintendo builds the install base for the hardware later this year with their recently announced flood of new games. It's also worth noting that the Wii U and PS4 will be the only real next gen machines in Japan and the excellent and successful Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance for 3DS is a direct prequel to the Kingdom Hearts III storyline making a strong argument for a Wii U release. Until there is more news, enjoy the reveal trailer for this highly anticipated game!

Mega Man 2, 3 & 4 Now Available For Wii U eShop In North America

To celebrate Mega Man's inclusion in the latest Super Smash Bros., Capcom and Nintendo have surprised Wii U Virtual Console fans with the release of the classic NES Mega Man trilogy which is available today. Fans of the classic NES Mega Man games will usually cite the second, third and fourth entries as the best games of the original six released on the original NES. Each of the three games are $4.99 and feature standard Wii U Virtual Console enhancements including save states, adjustable control options and off-screen play. Each game also has its own Miiverse community which are live right now. Enjoy!

Mega Man Blasts Into Super Smash Bros. Wii U & 3DS!

Mega Man is back! Ironically it is through Nintendo's flagship brawling series, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. During today's Nintendo Direct, the Big N showcased a new trailer for the legendary franchise that surprised fans with the reveal of the Blue Bomber accompanied by an amazing remix of classic Mega Man music.

It is no secret that Smash Bros. fans have been begging for his inclusion since the GameCube entry of the series, Super Smash Bros. Melee. I've gotta say that Mega Man's inclusion in the newest title feels particularly special since Capcom has all but ignored him over the last few years. This makes him a welcome addition for the Nintendo faithful who literally put him on the map back in the 80's on the original NES. The trailer gives us a sneak peak of his exclusive level, some of the classic music and the fact that you have access to a wide variety of weapons he has gained over the years. What are your thoughts on Mega Man's inclusion in Smash Bros.? Please comment below. Enjoy!

Rayman Legends E3 2013 Trailer Double Feature

Rayman Legends is shaping up to be one hell of a great game. After logging many hours on the Rayman Legends Challenge App for Wii U, I can honestly say that this game is poised to make a big splash for platform and Rayman fans alike. One of the more impressive aspect of the game is the art style which oozes personality and creates a stunning world that you just want to explore. To give you a greater look into this world, UbiSoft has crafted a wonderful CGI trailer that has an almost Pixar-like quality to it. Enjoy!

Next up is the gameplay trailer which shows off some of the new content added due to the games initial delay back in February. We also get more insight into the multiplayer modes (complete with leaderboards), new bosses and the over 120 levels that will fill out this beautiful epic. The game is set to hit the Wii U on September 3rd. Enjoy!

Fan Made "Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii" Will Delight Mario Fans

While the Mario faithful will soon be treated to New Super Luigi U for the Wii U, a group of dedicated fans have crafted their own expansion to New Super Mario Bros. Wii and it is now available for everyone to enjoy. Built over the course of 3 years and featuring 128 brand new levels, Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii is an impressive piece of work that essentially gives you an entire games worth of content for free. The game features new bosses and enemies as well as original graphics and music. You would normally expect something like this to force you to illegally mod your hardware to enjoy but the developers have managed to create an option that allows you to play on your standard Wii or Wii U with a copy of the original New Super Mario Bros. Wii and SD Card. The developers have put together a trailer featuring their brilliant work and even offer the soundtrack as a free download. Enjoy!

A Hat In Time Kickstarts Its Way To Success!

A Hat in Time continues to make a name for itself as a colorful and unique throwback to the platforming genre that has largely been ignored outside of titles like Mario and Rayman. Treon's Realm has featured the game twice, both here and here, but the game's independent nature meant that it would take quite a while to develop without solid funding.

Fortunately, with the help of Kickstarter, we are finally going to see this wonderful game come to fruition. The development team was asking for $30,000 to complete the project and I'm happy to report that they have already gotten over $110,000 with 19 days to go thanks to some generous stretch goals. One of the most tantalizing stretch goals which is set at $150,000 will see Grant Kirkhope compose a song for the final game (Mr. Kirkhope is the famous RARE composer responsible for many classic soundtracks such as Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark). Currently the game is set to hit PC and Mac with a Wii U version planned but not yet 100% confirmed (the developer is working out the logistics of getting the game on Nintendo's HD console). Be sure to check out the campaign and donate if you like what you see as we need more creative games like this in an industry full of sequels and first person shooters. Enjoy!

For those curious about the ambitious Project X Zone for 3DS, you can now try the game for free with the recently released "Demo A". The demo features a single battle area but manages to show off the english translation, gameplay mechanics and a good variety of the crossover characters from Namco/Capcom/Sega. As the "Demo A" title implies, Namco is planning to release at least one more demo before the games release on June 25th. I highly recommend pre-ordering this game if you are interested as it will likely have a low print run and the initial "Limited Edition" includes a ton of extras including the game soundtrack, mini art book and mini poster. The Neverhood Gets A Spiritual Successor!

When if comes to insanely unique point n click adventure titles, few can hold a candle to the 90's classic The Neverhood. Its incredible mix of humorous storytelling, awesome claymation visuals and absurdly great soundtrack created an adventure game that even today has no equal. The creative team that made that classic game has banded together (Pencil Test Studios) to create a new game titled Armikrog which shares a lot with its spiritual predecessor. The team is using Kickstarter to allow fans to help in its creation because, let's face it, no publisher wants to fund something this creative. The game is set to hit PC, Mac and Linux (all DRM free!) with a potential Wii U release in the future. The team is requesting $900,000 to complete the project and is offering many great rewards for your donation. With 21 days left in the campaign, the game has amassed thousands of contributors and raised about half of its goal meaning we are likely to see this imaginative project take the Adventure game genre by storm. I urge you to check out the game and donate if you like what you see. Enjoy and feel free to share your memories of The Neverhood below!

Nintendo Is Treating Fans To An Hour Long E3 Nintendo Direct

Despite Nintendo choosing to opt out of the traditional E3 conference, they are looking to make an even bigger impact with their non-traditional approach to E3 and focus on Nintendo Direct. It has been revealed that many of the games on the showroom floor will be playable at various Best Buy stores during the week of the show. In addition, there will be a large scale hour long Nintendo Direct airing on June 11th. What makes this exciting is that your traditional big E3 show runs anywhere from 1-2 hours but is loaded with sales statistics, celebrity fluff and technical jargon leaving about a third of the show for scant game info. Most (if not all) of this will be cut allowing for a solid hour of info focused strictly on the games with a massive focus on the Nintendo Wii U. You can expect video and demos of many big games including Super Smash Bros. (both Wii U & 3DS), Wind Waker HD, Bayonetta 2 and the new Mario 3D for Wii U. Best of all, rumors are pointing to some really big surprises from companies such as Retro, Shin'en and Sega among others. Treon's Realm will be covering E3 and updating regularly through the show so be sure of follow on Twitter for that latest updates.
