Shovel Knight Rides In Road Redemption

Road Redemption is shaping up to be the next-gen Road Rash we've always wanted but never got. Every trailer released for the title looks better than the last and numerous gameplay videos on YouTube show a game that is sure to please eager Wii U Owner's with tight control and fun gameplay. As the game ramps up to its 2015 release, Deep Seas Games has announced that Shovel Knight will be included in the game as a playable character. They even went as far as releasing a fresh new trailer showcasing the shovel wielding knight and the results are hilariously awesome. After a short introduction to the core game, we see Shovel Knight enter the game like a boss and proceed to shovel whip the living shit out of the other bikers and it's entertaining as hell. The trailer is a must see and only serves to make me want this game more than ever. Enjoy!

Dementium: The Ward Coming To 3DS Next Year

With the Dementium series recent return to Renegade Kid, fans have been eagerly awaiting what would happen with the underrated survival horror franchise. It turns out that the series will be making the leap to the mega successful Nintendo 3DS in 2015. Much like this years Moon Chronicles, Dementium: The Ward will get a full overhaul for the 3D console complete with enhanced visuals and gameplay tweaks to create a better experience. Unlike Moon Chronicles, it seems that the game will be released as a complete download on the eShop instead of the episode structure of Moon.

For those who don't know, Dementium: The Ward was Renegade Kid's first game back in 2007 and while the game was quite good, it was definitely rough around the edges with a harsh save system and punishing level of difficulty due to respawning enemies. Renegade Kid has pledged to fix these issues in the new version of the game which will make it a bit more accessible to horror fans pampered by the action horror games of the last half decade. This means that the game will likely use manual save points and the endlessly respawned enemies will be toned down dramatically for a more balanced experience. Hardcore fans need not worry though as Renegade Kid is considering how to offer a greater challenge for those who want a tougher experience (my guess would be through a difficulty selection). The game will likely run on a modified version of the Moon Chronicles engine which means 60 frames per second visuals even with the 3D turned on. Expect to see the game on the  3DS eShop around the middle of next year (Q2 2015).

As for the rest of the series, Renegade Kid has shown interest in re-releasing Dementium 2 on the 3DS as well which will make the series a real standout for the system. Fans have also been begging for a Wii U release of the series which would be an excellent fit for Nintendo's HD console. When it comes to the future, Dementium 3 is part of the long-term goals but won't happen for quite a while. Any way you slice it, survival horror fans have a very good reason to be excited as this series is one of the better independent horror games on the market.

Nintendo Illustrates Their Amazing Software Lineup This Holiday!

Nintendo has remained rather humble when illustrating its software strength when compared to the PS4 and XBOne. With the holiday's upon us and Nintendo's impressive array of software for both the Wii U and 3DS, the Big N has opted to skip the rather boring traditional statistics and instead given us a festive infographic that illustrates just how good their games really are. Using the notoriously harsh Metacritic, they make a very compelling case why any Gamer should have a Wii U and 3DS in their current collection. Even more impressive is the fact that the games listed scored an 85% or above from not only professional critics but also user scores which are particularly harsh on games. Enjoy!

Activision Introduces 2 New Elements To Skylanders Universe

The popular Skylanders series has made a variety of changes over the years but those changes have largely stuck to the series 8 core elements. Before the release of Trap Team, rumors began to spread that the latest entry would introduce some new elements. Fans got even more curious as they played through the game and saw mysterious question mark doors which seemed to have no way to access them. It turns out that Activision managed to keep things quiet (an impressive feat with the Internet) until the official reveal of two brand new elements, Light and Dark.

The new elements feature a set of new Trap Masters, Traps, Core Characters, and brand new levels. Essentially, the new elements and their corresponding figures will act as a major DLC update to the game in physical form. These rather large DLC packs will be sold as "Dark/Light Element Expansion Packs" and will include a Trap Master, Trap and New Game Level. The new traps also mean a group of new bosses to capture which will be featured in the new levels.

Includes Knight Mare, Dark Trap and Midnight Museum Level

Includes Knight Light, Light Trap and  Sunscraper Spire Level

And lastly, here are the new core characters. They are both dragons and they are named Spotlight and Blackout respectively.

Each expansion set will retail for $29.99 and are set to be released before Christmas (12/21/14). Sadly, rumors are pointing to possible retail exclusivity to Toys R Us but I doubt this will remain in place considering how important these are to the Trap Team game. What do you think of the new additions to the Skylanders universe? Will you be adding them to your collection? Enjoy!

Xeodrifter Gets A Price, Release Date And New Trailer

Nintendo fans have had a long wait for a new Metroid title from the Big N, 4 years and counting to be exact. As we continue to wait for the return of our favorite female galactic bounty hunter, numerous indie games have stepped up to try and fill her shoes. While many (if not all) of these games are great titles, almost all of them fail to truly scratch that space themed Metroidvania itch left by Samus Aran.

With this in mind, we enter Xeodrifter by Renegade Kid. Xeodrifter is a passion project for designer Jools Watsham and boy does it show that passion. The game is a retro style Metroidvania game that captures that classic Metroid atmosphere and magic while blazing its own trail. When you consider that Renegade Kid's own Moon for the Nintendo DS did a better job of feeling like Metroid than Nintendo's own Metroid Prime Hunters, you know your in good hands with Xeodrifter. To celebrate the games upcoming launch, Renegade Kid has announced the games price ($9.99) and release date (December 11) as well as giving fans a fresh new trailer. Enjoy!

Mario Maker Now Features 4 Of The Biggest Mario Games Ever!

In addition to Nintendo showcasing the latest Zelda game, they also took the chance to give fans an updated look at Mario Maker for the Wii U. With its recently expanded building options, the game is poised to become the trojan horse that will move Nintendo's HD console in 2015. In a similar fashion to Wii Sports, Mario Maker is simple to understand, incredibly social and has the potential to become a cultural sensation as it allows literally anyone to easily build, play and share levels for one of the most iconic video games of all time.

In its initial reveal at E3 2014, Mario Maker excited fans with the ability to easily build/modify levels based on the original Super Mario Bros. for NES and New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U. This alone would have been enough but in their latest trailer for the game, Nintendo has revealed the ability to build levels with themes based on Super Mario Bros. 3 for NES and Super Mario World for SNES. This means that every major 2D Mario game is covered and the possibility's are only limited by your own creativity. Mario Maker will also allow sharing of levels over the Internet meaning that fans will have access to thousands of new levels making this an amazing value.

Nintendo Gives A Sneak Peak Of The New Zelda For Wii U!

Nintendo used Friday's Video Game Awards to unveil a bit of new info on their upcoming Wii U & 3DS games. The biggest surprise of the night was a video of Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma playing an early build of the new Legend of Zelda due out for the Wii U next year. The sneak peak showcased a game that is absolutely massive and seems to take the best parts of previous 3D Zelda games and combine them with the free and open gameplay of the original NES Zelda. The results are quite stunning even at this stage of development (the game still has about a year of development left before release). Some of the highlights include the return of Epona and her ability to dodge obstacles (like a real horse), a new massive Hyrule that will require the Wii U GamePad to truly navigate and the ability to jump off of Epona and attack enemies in slow motion. If you are curious to see the game in action (and who isn't?), be sure to check out the video below. Enjoy!

Black Friday Trailer Gives A Chillingly Accurate Depiction Of The Dark Day

Black Friday is a disgusting symbol of America's obsession with buying stuff simply because "it was a good deal". In recent years, the dark day has really gotten out of hand with people going as far as shooting each other while others are tragically trampled to death in an effort to "save a few bucks". Every year, the day is manipulated by desperate retailers in a vain attempt to remain relevant despite their accelerated downfall brought on by online shopping.

To illustrate just how ridiculous Black Friday has become, YouTube channel Nacho Punch has crafted a movie trailer for the day which gives a darkly comedic portrayal to the day after Thanksgiving (or 6pm Thanksgiving Day which is just plain disgusting). Having spent the better half of a decade behind the retail counter, experiencing the darker side of the American shopper, I can personally attest that despite the dark comedy portrayed in this trailer it is actually far more accurate than most realize. While I am not a fan of the day for how it is exploited, I don't generally have an issue with it as a normal shopping day to be out with the family witnessing the idiots who loose their mind over it. Enjoy and please shop responsibly.

Dancing With The Stars Gets Invaded By The Mushroom Kingdom

While the uneducated and gaming media in general love to take shots at Nintendo, there's no denying that the Big N makes an major impact whenever they pop up in culture. One of the more unexpected appearances came in the form of a recent Dancing with the Stars performance featuring a dance medley of classic Super Mario music. Duck Dynasty's Sadie Robertson and dancer Mark Ballas performed the impressive dance number earning a perfect score. It's quite impressive and is sure to bring a smile to any Super Mario fan.

If you like the Super Mario medley and would like to add it to your playlist, Nintendo is featuring the song on their website as a free download. Nintendo fans will be thrilled to hear that the medley was not only provided by the Big N but legendary Nintendo Composer Koji Kondo actually crafted the tune for the performance. Be sure to grab a copy as it is a catchy piece of nostalgic music. Enjoy!

Teslagrad Gets Physical On Wii U In Early 2015!

The Wii U is home to a robust selection of excellent Indie games on its eShop service with many of the games being even better than the big budget AAA titles pumped into retail for $60. With this success, some indie developers are given the opportunity to actually release a physical retail version of their game. For fans of physical media in gaming (myself included), the opportunity to add these games to their gaming library complete with disc and boxart is something quite special.

This brings us to the excellent Metroidvania game known as Teslagrad which was developed by Rain Games and saw release on the Wii U in September. The game received great reviews and is up there with titles like Shovel Knight as one of the best Indie games available on Nintendo's criminally underrated HD console. It was announced earlier this year that Rain Games had worked out a deal to release a physical retail disc version of the game for the Wii U but the specific date has yet to be set. It has been revealed that SOEDESCO will be managing the physical distribution and the game is set for an early 2015 release on Wii U. If you're tired of the same old shit being shoveled out by traditional third party developers every year and want to support a developer with passion, you should grab a copy of Teslagrad (digital or physical) and experience this wonderful gem. Enjoy!

Nintendo Showcases Upcoming (2014/2015) Wii U & 3DS Nindie Games

Nintendo has made it very clear that their Indie Developers (a.k.a. Nindies) are essentially the new third party developers for their consoles. In their continuing effort to support the Nindies, Nintendo has been doing everything from sponsoring Indie Developer conferences to featuring these games on their own website and YouTube channel. "The Last Goodbye" Hobbit Music Video Is Both Epic & Emotional!

With The Hobbit trilogy drawing to a close next month with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Peter Jackson's brilliant vision of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic book series will finally be complete after 15 years. Unlike a more infamous double trilogy movie series, Peter Jackson has crafted a six movie series that truly feels like a cohesive whole despite the second trilogy being a prequel and having been shot 10 years after the original trilogy.

To give a proper send-off to the series as a whole, a new official music video has been released for the series final major song which will play during the credits of The Battle of the Five Armies. The song is fittingly titled "The Last Goodbye" and is brilliantly performed by Billy Boyd, the actor who portrayed Pippin in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Both the song and video are an emotional finale to a film series that will go down as one of the greatest tales ever put to film. If you are a fan of the films, the video will pull at your heartstrings in the best possible way as it features footage from The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit as well as behind the scenes footage of the making of the series. An absolute must watch that will make you want to experience the epic saga all over again. Enjoy!

Duck Hunt Is Coming To Wii U Virtual Console!

The NES light gun classic Duck Hunt is finally coming to the Virtual Console service and could mark the start of other classics coming to the service. Since the Virtual Console hit the Wii back in 2006, many fans have wondered when Nintendo's light gun games would come to the service seeing as the Wii Remote would make the perfect alternative to the NES Zapper. For years, Nintendo remained silent and it seemed that games such as Duck Hunt would be lost in the past.

Fortunately, with the release of the new Super Smash Bros., Nintendo has brought back the Duck Hunt Dog and Duck as a playable team and used the opportunity to bring their classic game to the Wii U. To accommodate the move to the Wii U, Nintendo has added an on-screen reticle which is controlled by the Wii Remote. The games official page also states the the game will support 2 player and off-TV play (for those who don't know, the Wii U GamePad has a sensor bar built into it to support Wii Remote pointer control). With any luck, Duck Hunt's arrival on the service will lead to eventual release of other NES Zapper classics such as Hogan's Alley and Wild Gunman (fans of Back to the Future will remember this classic).

Pikmin 3 Gets A Rebirth With Short Films And Wii U eShop Demo!

Pikmin 3 is easily one of more unique titles to grace Nintendo's first HD console but unfortunately never got the recognition it deserved due to the the unwarranted media bashing of the Wii U during 2013 and a lot of 2014. Fortunately Nintendo is giving the game a second chance now that everyone is crawling back to the Wii U due to it having the best exclusive titles of the eighth generation consoles (Wii U, PS4, XBOne). One way they are doing this is by offering a full playable demo of Pikmin 3 on the eShop. What makes this demo special is that any of your progress in the demo will be saved and carried over to the full retail version of the game should you decide to add this gem to your collection. I highly recommend giving this game a try if you have a Wii U or are getting one this fall.

Nintendo is also releasing a series of adorable Pikmin short films on the 3DS & Wii U eShop. The films were crafted and directed by series creator (and legendary game designer) Shigeru Miyamoto. These three short films titled The Night Juicer, Treasure in a Bottle and Occupational Hazards further expand on the cute little Pikmin and their lives outside of the game world. Your viewing preference will be based on the console of choice with Pikmin Short Movies 3D for 3DS and Pikmin Short Movies HD for Wii U priced at $4.99 each. Your film purchase will also include the animated storyboards Mr. Miyamoto used to plan the film which were created using Nintendo's own Flipnote Studio software from the Nintendo DSi. Enjoy!

Guns, Gore & Cannoli Coming To Wii U!

Indie developer Crazy Monkey Studios has just revealed that its latest game titled Guns, Gore & Cannoli will be coming to the Wii U in Early 2015. The game is a side scrolling shooter featuring beautiful hand drawn 2D graphics and shooting gameplay which looks very similar to the excellent Metal Slug series. What really makes the game stand out is its unique story and setting. You play as a 1920's gangster known as Vinnie Cannoli in the city of prohibition era Thugtown. You are tasked with finding a missing mobster in the middle of a turf war between mafia family's. What really amps up the action is the inclusion of a zombie outbreak caused by mob produced alcohol (moonshine). While I agree with many that zombie's have been overused in media over the last 10 years, it is really cool to see a game with a unique take on the concept.

As the title implies, Guns, Gore & Cannoli is loaded with some serious firepower (Tommie Gun, Shotgun, Flamethrower, etc.) and buckets of blood exploding all over the screen. The game will also feature local Co-op so you can team up with some friends and blast everything in sight, a feature sorely lacking in many recent online obsessed games. If you're a fan of classics like Contra and Metal Slug, Guns, Gore & Cannoli is a game to keep on your radar. Enjoy!

Grant Kirkhope Releases Soundtrack To A Game That Never Happened

He has since shifted to more independent work which will be featured on upcoming indie games such as A Hat in Time, Hex Heroes and Lobodestroyo (all of which are headed to the Wii U). Throughout his many years composing video games, he has even crafted tracks for games that never happened. His latest Bandcamp release is a 3 track album titled "The game that never was and never happened!" which gives fans an audio sneak peak into a game that could have been in development but never materialized. While some may jump to the conclusion that this is lost material for Banjo-Kazooie, Mr. Kirkhope has clearly stated that this is not the case. Nintendo wisely teamed with Platinum Games to bring us Bayonetta 2, a title that would never have happened without the Big N's involvement.

While trailers and gameplay videos have done wonders to showcase the game, Nintendo has opted to offer a fully playable demo of the game to allow anyone on the fence a chance to test drive what will easily become the best action game of 2014. After completing the demo 2 times (once with standard controls and once with touch controls), I can say that the demo gives you a perfect taste of the gameplay and visuals while leaving you begging for more. The demo is about 730MB in size and offers 15 plays which should be more than enough for those needing a Bayonetta fix before the games October 24th release date. Enjoy!

XEODRIFTER Gets Its First Glorious Trailer

Jools Watsham's Xeodrifter is approaching completion and Renegade Kid has just released a new trailer showcasing the stunning Metroidvania game. With Nintendo keeping silent on any new Metroid titles, the indie community has stepped up to fill the void left by Samus Aran. While excellent titles like Unepic and Teslagrad do an excellent job of expanding on the Metroidvania sub-genre, Xeodrifter may very well be one of the first games to truly capture everything we love about the Metroid franchise. The game has had a lightning quick development cycle driven by the very passionate Jools Watsham and has even been chronicled on GoNintendo.com giving some excellent insight on the game development process. The game is set for the 3DS eShop this fall with a possible Wii U version in the future. Enjoy!

Indie Platformer "PSYSCROLR" Set As Wii U Exclusive!

Actos Games, creator of the upcoming APEXICON - Fantasy Puzzle Combat, has recently announced a new game exclusively for Wii U titled PSYSCROLR. The game is a platformer designed to take advantage of the Wii U Gamepad and its touchscreen. In the game, you will control the Scrolr, a young boy with psychic powers controlled with the touch screen. You will be guided the Narrator, a disembodied voice who helps the Scrolr through the world (this is similar to the Narrator from the indie hit Bastion).

PSYSCROLR is the perfect example of the new wave of Wii U indie developers who are getting experimental and truly trying to take advantage of the limitless possibilities offered by the underrated Wii U and its unique controller. The developer has recently released the first video in a new series which both chronicles the games development and showcases how it utilizes the Wii U. Wii U Set To Get A Minecraft Clone Fittingly Titled "U Craft"

There's no denying Minecraft has become one of the biggest video game hits of the last 5 years. Hell, it's so big that Microsoft just dropped $2.5 Billion to purchase the franchise which hopefully won't end with Microsoft ruining Minecraft like they did RARE. While the game has seen release on just about every platform imaginable, the one that makes the most sense has been completely ignored with no Nintendo Wii U release. The Wii U Gamepad was tailor made for a game like Minecraft making its absense stick out like a sore thumb. This has not gone unnoticed by indie developer Nexis Games (BrickBlast U!, The Dance of the Damned) leading to the creation of U Craft, a Minecraft clone looking to take advantage of Nintendo's unique console.  The game is aiming for a late 2014 release but could slip into early 2015 considering how large the project is. Little has been shown of the game outside of a teaser trailer but if Nexis Games delivers, Nintendo fans will finally be able to scratch their Minecraft itch. Enjoy!

Treon's Game of the Week - X-Type (XTYPE+)

Twin stick shooters have always been a blast to play with their engaging spin on old school space shooters like Space Invaders. They have even experienced quite a rebirth during the recent indie gaming boom with developers exploring the finer aspects of gameplay offered by this classic shooter genre. Robotron 2084 was one of the earliest games to popularize the sub genre of the space shooter but it took indie hits such as Geometry Wars and The Binding of Isaac to really give twin stick shooters a new lease on life. Indie friendly consoles such as the Ouya and Wii U have even experienced some twin stick gems such as Meltdown, Nano Assault Neo and XTYPE+.

X-Type is a simple yet addictive shooter that places it's focus on style and tight controls to craft a great game that channels the spirit of Geometry Wars. The game is essentially a string of randomly generated boss battles where top scores and leaderboards are the driving force. When the player surrenders themselves to the tight controls, you experience an almost zen like level of immersion. The game started as an HTML 5 browser based experience built in the versatile Impact game engine but was expanded when the developer worked with Nintendo to make the Impact engine a part of the Wii U development environment (it should be noted that X-Type and the Impact engine are from the same indie developer). The results are an incredibly fluid game showcasing the versatility of HTML 5 as a game engine. The enhanced XTYPE+ is available on the Wii U eShop for a mere $2.99 and comes highly recommended but the developer also offers the original version of X-Type on the Impact site as a fully playable free game. X-Type is a must play for twin stick shooter fans on either system so be sure to give it a try. Enjoy!

Two Tribes Bringing RIVE To Wii U

Two Tribes has been responsible for some real gems on the Wii U eShop despite having to go through a recent restructuring of the company. Their many hits includes greats such as the Toki Tori series, Edge and Rush. The company has a firm handle on Nintendo hardware which shines through in their excellent work on the Wii U.  Happily, Two Tribes has recently revealed that their latest game known as RIVE will be coming to the Wii U in 2015.

RIVE is a futuristic side-scrolling action platformer which looks similar to classics such as the Contra series. The game is running on a modified version of the Toki Tori 2+ engine which bodes well for the game considering how well the engine was optimized for Nintendo's HD console. Interestingly, RIVE is being developed internally by Two Tribes for the Wii U alongside the PC version while the PS4 & XBOne versions are being farmed out to other developers. This is interesting considering that the traditional third parties normally do the opposite and shows that indie developers really do respect the Nintendo fans by taking their work seriously. Enjoy!

Fan Animated Zelda Series Retells "A Link To The Past"

Nintendo has wisely avoided expanding the Zelda franchise into other media outside of the questionable animated series from the late 80's. Despite fans crying for a movie or animation, its safer for Nintendo not to stray from the subjective video game experience since fans have set in their mind what the voices and characters should and should not be. This was clearly proven by Metroid: Other M which attempted to provide both a voice to bounty hunter Samus Aran and also give fans a truly cinematic Metroid experience which many fans claimed to want. Sadly, despite trying something new, the last Metroid game received a harsh and arguably undeserved bashing from the gaming community ensuring that Link and Princess Zelda would not follow in Samus' footsteps.

On the flipside, fan works are given much more latitude and rightly so considering their work comes from passion and not profit motive. This brings us to the beautiful Zeldamotion animated series by YouTube channel Aeipathy Industries which has set out to bring fans an animated retelling of the SNES classic, The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. The group released a stunning trailer back in 2012 which showed a lot of promise but was watched with cautious optimism considering the fate of previous Zelda fan works. Fortunately Episode 1 was released in mid September and the response has been quite positive. The first episode gives a wonderful taste of what's to come and is sure to delight any fan with its depiction of Link's early adventure in this legendary story. Enjoy!
